Project: Balearic Complex for Research, Technological Development and Innovation in the ParcBit Activity: Building and Architecture Product: Construction and restoration of buildings Geographic data: España Start date: February 2008 End date: April 2010 This building, used for research and development activities within the field of science and technology, is noteworthy for its functional and sustainable design, and also for its size and cost. Located in the Technological Innovation Park (ParcBit), in the municipal district of Palma de Mallorca, this building, used for research and development activities in the areas of science and technology, noteworthy for its functional and sustainable design, represented the largest construction project carried out by the Department of Urban Planning of the Balearic Islands, having a constructed area of 10,142 m2 and a budget of €17,100,000 for the contract. The two main types of activities that are carried out there by its teams of experts in physics, mathematics, technology and biology, are embodied in the architectural project through the division of the building into two separate modules which are set up as two buildings separated by a central pedestrian street that allows independent access, but connected in the underground levels of the buildings, where, in order to avoid duplication, there are shared facilities such as the library, parking, dressing rooms, areas of installations, etc. Thanks to their functionality, the workplaces have a controlled scale and are always connected to patios, which creates pleasant atmospheres. The bioclimatic criteria (orientation, sunlight, winds, etc.) have also played an important role in the construction of this building so as to achieve the highest levels of comfort and natural lighting and ventilation, also incorporating other elements such as rooftop gardens, plant facades in the patios facing southeast, recovery of rain water for irrigation, ventilated facades, etc., which improve the energy efficiency of the whole building.
