Project: Recovery of the "Azuda de la Montaña" waterwheel and its surroundings in Aranjuez Activity: Water Product: Supply of water Geographic data: Aranjuez, Madrid, España Start date: May 2011 End date: December 2012 The goal of the project located in the surroundings of Aranjuez, declared by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site in 2001, is to restore the Azuda de la Montaña, a ferris wheel of paddles and an aqueduct on the meadow watered by the Tagus and the Jarama rivers. Restoring this old ferris wheel, which stands more than 14 meters high, and restoring canals and the aqueduct that remained in disuse, are part of a project initially spearheaded by the "La Azuda" neighbourhood association, which has received support from the Ministry of the Environment through the Tagus Hydrographic Confederation. After recovering this valuable heritage abandoned according to its original design and materials, the architectural and industrial ensemble was successfully showcased and reintegrated into the natural environment of the Azuda de la Montaña ferris wheel, repopulated with the same species as those of the original vegetation cover, also requiring our intervention to repair and build roads, install wooden walkways and create new seating areas equipped with urban furniture and lighting, which promotes the cultural use of the whole area.
