Project: Collection and care of pets abandoned in the province of Pontevedra Activity: Agricultural Production, Fisheries and Food Services Farming Product: Farms and agricultural production, forestry and fishing Geographic data: España Start date: January 2013 End date: March 2014 This project involves the collection of dogs abandoned at those town halls in the province with less than 50,000 inhabitants, who are signatories of the collaboration agreement with the Provincial Government of Pontevedra. This action plan began with a first phase of collecting notices or calls from the local authorities, or entities designated by them, to pick up dogs and other animals abandoned or wandering around, in order to transport them to the Animal Protection Shelter of Armenteira, where the animals collected were checked and veterinary assistance was provided to the wounded or sick animals. The management of this shelter required cleaning the facilities on a daily basis and providing basic care to the animals, both in terms of feeding and cleaning them. An additional phase consisted of developing activities aimed at reducing the number of animals abandoned, promoting adoptions and spaying the females given in adoption, according to veterinary criterion. This project also included registering the animals adopted in the Galician Register for Identification of Pets (REGIAC), processing the relevant complaints in case of any infraction.
