Project: Technical Assistance, Training and Capacity Building in the Maasai Community - Ngorongoro (Tanzania) Activity: Environment Product: CONSERVATION OF BIODIVERSITY Geographic data: Tanzania Start date: March 2010 End date: December 2010 Training in the conservation of wildlife in the Ngorongoro Conservation Area Action carried out by the National Parks Autonomous Agency ("OAPN", belonging to the Ministry of Agriculture, Food and Environment), in collaboration with the Spanish Agency for International Cooperation for Development (AECID). The overall objective of the project was to enable the Maasai community, and other communities that inhabit the area, to optimally manage the territory they inhabit and use, adding the production of biodiversity to its livestock production: conservation of the natural environment, tourism resources, management of wildlife and other resources that can be generated. The activities of the project were as follows: 1. Preparatory work for the course on capacity building offered to the Maasai patrol. 2. Development of teaching materials for the Maasai patrol and establishment of an adequate teaching methodology. 3. Teaching of the workshop 4. Follow-up and obtaining information on the bomas (holding pens) and protected and unprotected herds. 5. Installation of anti-predation infrastructures in bomas and selected herds. 6. Creation of country roads by the Maasai patrol to monitor the wildlife, prevention of poaching and identification of potential threats to wildlife. 7. Realization of field surveys by the Maasai patrol to locate and map points and routes for ecotourism activities. 8. Realization of field surveys by the Maasai patrol to identify and map areas of potential ecological connectivity between the populations of lions and rhinos of the Serengeti National Park and the Ngorongoro Crater and location of potential habitats. 9. Realization of the educational workshop.
